Elfenkleid Wien

A Viennese Fairytale by Elfenkleid

A fashion duo with a ladylike vision

Sandra Thaler and Annette Prechtl have been designing gorgeous gowns for over a decade, in their delightful atelier in the heart of Vienna. They share their story and their view on this magic city.

Lightweight, flowing and feminine are just a few of the words that come to mind when you glance inside the immaculate studio where Elfenkleid designs are brought to life. Season after season and collection after collection, the two designers find a new way to give a modern twist to romanticism.

Step inside their unique studio in Vienna and discover a natural and casual approach to fashion, whether it’s a soft sweater or a bespoke wedding gown worthy of a regal cleebration. Or you can do all that right here, with us, while we chat to these talented ladies:

One brand, two designers. What makes it the perfect combination? Do you have similar styles or do you complement each other’s vision?

We always have a common focus, which often includes different perspectives to be discussed. Our cooperation is based on respect, trust and compromises in all areas. It’s like in a good relationship, which only works with tolerance, openness and curiosity for the other.

Your designs have a delicate simplicity, an almost Scandinavian feel. How do you manage to always refresh your look without losing that cleanliness and femininity?

The nice thing about clarity and simplicity is that it does not require large changes to stay up to date. Of course this is quite a big challenge.

By small interventions such as the use of new materials, other colours and slight changes in the lines, something new is created without losing that clarity.

Perhaps the secret formula is just our desire for timelessness and simplicity.

Was your style influenced greatly by the fashion school of Vienna? What do you think is Vienna’s unique mark on the fashion world?

It is not easy for us to answer this question because for that we would need to see us through the eyes of someone else. Of course we are always influenced by what we have learned, be it in the sense that we just do the opposite of it – or, in other words, that we have found our own style and expression based on this contradiction.

The international reputation of the Viennese fashion scene is certainly based on the myth „Helmut Lang“.

Creating wedding dresses seems like a magical experience – did that determine you to open your atelier for clients to see you at work?

Right from the beginning we wanted to make the way we work and how we create our pieces visible to our customers. This creates a very special atmosphere, which we highly appreciate – so it was a logical decision to transfer this idea of working to our „bridal couture collection“.

What is your personal style? How much of your closet is filled with your own creations?

We wear our own collections a lot. Firstly because we are always looking forward to the new collection pieces when they come out of production, but also in order to test and to experience what it feels like to wear “elfenkleid”. Our philosophy of longevity and timelessness also has the advantage that our creations can be combined with other labels’ pieces and accessories to create a new look.

How would you describe the style of the Viennese women?

The beautiful and interesting thing about Vienna is the mix of different styles & tastes. Thus in our eyes it is impossible to define a standard Viennese look.

What wardrobe essentials should we pack for a city trip to Vienna?

In autumn take with you a warm coat with a hood against the cold weather plus simple overalls for wearing during the day when you take a walk in the Prater or when you visit one of the many museums. For the evening we recommend an elegant silk dress.

I’m not sure if it’s the words or the pictures, but I am sure that we’ve convinced you to visit Elfenklein on your next trip to Vienna. We’ll be very jealous of any purchase you make, but we would love to see it nonetheless. And if exploring the best of Vienna according to Sandra & Annette helped you discover some hidden gems in the city, we’d love to hear about that too, perhaps in the shape of an Insider Guide. May all your travels be stylish!
