Radiant orchid: how to wear the colour of 2014

An invitation to innovation

That is how Pantone describes their colour of choice for this year. A choice meant to enrich our minds by sparking creativity but we can start by enriching our closets with the hottest colour of the moment!

More than a colour institute, Pantone is a trend analyser, observing and predicting the trends that will emerge every year, as far as colours are concerned. This year the chosen shade to fill our wardrobes, wallpapers or make-up kits is, as you probably know well enough by now, Radiant Orchid. You’ve seen it, you’ve heard about it, but how do you take a definition and turn it into viable fashion advice?

“An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”

That is the description we’re being offered and it’s a rich one. Radiant Orchid is a mix of pink and purple shades. While bluish purples are elegant yet difficult colours to wear if you don’t have the right complexion, this particular shade has a touch of pink that radiates on the skin and makes it glow. Which turns it into the perfect choice for summer. It’s almost a pastel shade but one that captures your attention and can also be glammed up to be more ladylike rather than girly.

So where do you find the exact shade we’re looking for? Well, designers have made the most of the trend – from Juicy Couture to Marc Jacobs and evening gowns to handbags, the soft purple invasion has begun. And luckily for us, there are many variations of this hue that we can incorporate into our outfits, as to match our taste or existent clothing. You don’t need a whole new wardrobe, just a whole new mix-and-match strategy.

What should you buy? Anything that mixes your favourite purple shade with summer trends: tea-length skirts, full-width trousers and bold prints. For a day look, Rochas has a lovely pleated midi skirt in a discrete shade that can be worn with bolder tones. A cotton top is the perfect choice for a hot day, while the colourful sea-inspired print makes it anything but ordinary. Summer is the time to shine, so what about a little bling on your feet? Match it with an oversized ring and tone it down with a simple handbag.

What should you keep? Last year’s crop top mania is still riding the trend wave and it’s a complimentary match for high-waist full-width trousers. Ballet flats are always in style (street style at least) but they can’t get any fancier than a deep purple velvet pair. Even watches get the orchid treatment, so it’s really easy to find the perfect item for you! Add a cardigan or coat and you have the ideal look for a chilly day – maybe even a walk through autumn leafs.

But there’s a long way to go before that so back to sunny days and party evenings! There’s a touch of purple for your evening look too. Mary Katrantzou is playing with hints of purple and pink in her spring collection and this mix of floral, geometric and abstract prints will be an attention-getter. A pair of quirky stilettos in the dominant tones of the dress will turn you into a modern princess while a bit of a golden hardware will bring a lot of shine. But most importantly, wear a sunny disposition and a big smile. That’s the perfect accessory for a summery radiant orchid look!
