Get the royal treatment for two
Vienna is one of those European capitals that exudes romance through every pore, every old palace and butterfly garden. Make the most of it:
Planning to grab your other half and skip over to Austria on you next holiday? Or maybe a special anniversary? Whatever you’re looking for in romantic Vienna, this is where you start putting together the perfect couple getaway – from morning coffee to late drinks.
Have coffee at: Teehaus Haas&Haas
Find it at: Stephansplatz 4
The best wake-up call – other than breakfast in bed, but you’re on holiday and probably not cooking – is a cup of tea at Haas & Haas. The cosy centrally-located space has a teahouse and a store where you can buy what you first sample. And the selection is extraordinary, with tea assortments from all around the globe – Japan to the United Kingdom – respecting their customs and ceremonials.
Serve your tea with some sweets for your sweetheart: muffins, jam or chocolate. And if your sightseeing plans require more energy, try one of the 30 breakfast menus, internationally-inspired as well: from miso soup to French croissants.
Shop at: Amicis
Once you’ve had your fix of cakes and teas, it’s time to explore the center of the city, with its enchanting old buildings and tempting little stores. While shopping might not be the most attractive proposition for the male half of your couple, there are a few places that sweeten the blow. Amicis is one of them.
With two stores door-to-door, they separate the men and women’s sections so you can both explore at your own pace and shop to your liking. But shop for what? Well easy luxury is the theme at Amicis, and that means a friendly selection of Tom Ford, Stella McCartey, Balmain, Isabel Marant or Victoria Beckham. Add some blinged accessories from Anya Hindmarch and a pair of Louboutins and your outfit for date night is sorted.
Relax at: Arany Spa
Find it at: Am Hof 2
When all that shopping has gotten you exhausted, walk up the Kohlmarkt towards the Park Hyatt Hotel inside the Goldenes Quartier area. What you’ll find there, in the middle of luxury stores and gourmet restaurants, is the most relaxing refined spa in romantic Vienna. The 15-meter pool will have no problem accommodating both of you, but – better yet – reserve a treatment room for couples, with dedicated pampering routines. Any romantic holiday needs some proper unwinding.
Dine at: Gaumenspiel
Find it at: Zieglergasse 54
The plant-based massage might have made you a touch hungry and our suggestion for that special dinner date is Gaumspiel. Why? Why not. It is intimate, warm and welcoming, with passionately red walls, immaculate table tops and a great selection of wines to flirt over.
There is also a green garden where you can serve Mediterranean and Austrian cuisine, with the menu changing regularly to accommodate the seasons and the local producers. Only one decision left to make: vegan samosa or pumpkin goulash?
Start a date with: Fiaker
Find it at: Stephansplatz and most major squares
A bit of a cliché but not enough to disregard it completely – especially not while on a romantic Vienna holiday. The popular horse-drawn carriages are still one of the best ways to explore the city with your loved one, taking you all around the most popular and classic sights in the city, from royal palaces to parks that smell like fresh cut grass.
You can find these stands in most of the major squares in the city and reserve a tour of the Old City in less than half an hour or the full hour if you prefer an extended route.
End a date at: Heuriger Sirbu
Find it at: Kahlenberger Str. 210 | Photo: STADTBEKANNT
To end the day in the ultimate romantic Vienna destination, get out the carriage and into a taxi to take you to the hills around the city. Don’t just wander around but head over to one of the vineyards offering unrivalled panoramas over the capital and endless wine menus.
For an even more special experience, Heuringer Sirbu has a not-so-secret but quite secluded bench for couples who want to toast to their happiness in private. Isn’t that a dream ending to a romantic escapade?
The answer to that question can only be yes but if you still want more from your romantic Vienna trip, we have a fix for that as well. And it’s our Vienna Glam Guide, an ebook showing you the most beloved places by locals and specific itineraries for fashionistas, romantic holidays, Christmas getaways and so on. It’s out soon so keep an eye on that!
