Bring culture and sport to your holiday
Beyond the famous Easter markets, Vienna has plenty of art and culture to serve you during a spring city break. Athletic types will love our suggestions too!
Vienna is a popular spring travel destination due to its accessibility to major airports in Europe, its inspiring architecture and its eye for art, music and culture. It might not be a fashion capital first and foremost, but it is an easy place to explore, perfect for a weekend city break. Whether you’re still planning or already booked the trip, here are the events you need to keep an eye on if you end up in Vienna this spring:
20.03 – 30.04.2017
Music and Vienna have an undisputed special connection and sounds of blues fill the airwaves for pretty much the whole of April, when the world’s longest running blues festival is in town. Blues, rock, soul and boogie, performed by local and international bands on the scene at the Reigen. This year is headlined by artists from the US, like Sari Schorr and the UK – King King, the best British blue band, including some Woodstock legends like Miller Anderson. Visit their website for a detailed line-up and more information.
1.04 – 2.04.2017
When you see the twists, turns and spins of BMX experts, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is one for the young crowd, but the Argus Bike Festival is truly a celebration of the city’s love for all cycling. Besides the impressive displays of dexterity and skill, you can also spot families enjoying time together on two wheels, foundations with environmental concerns, bike gear retailers or cycling-oriented tourism offers. The main tricks take place on a stage in Rathausplatz but check the website for the full program.
12.05 – 14.05.2017
Fast forward to May and there’s a major obstacle on your way back to swimsuit season: the Genuss Festival, a delight of culinary specialties. The best of Austria meets during your spring travel to introduce you to Viennese wine, Wachau saffron, Carinthian honey and plenty of other goodies from big producers or small manufacturers. The hundreds of stands include a large organic selection with tasting sessions all day long. Find more info on the schedule and the stands you can find in the Stadtpark here.
23.04 – 24.04. 2017
If you’re feeling brave and well-prepared for this sort of spring travel, you can enjoy the sights of Vienna on the run. Quite literally, by joining the Vienna City Marathon. You might not be able to sneak through the narrow alleys of the old city, but the route covers an amazing number of highlights, from the Danube canal and the Prater to the Rathausplatz or even the Schonbrunn Palace if you’re feeling fit enough to attempt the full length of the marathon. You will definitely get some cool holiday stories to take home. Learn more about it here.
