Salvatore Ferragamo know he wanted to be a shoemaker from the young age of 9, when he created his first pair of shoes for his sister. He went on to study shoemaking in Naples and opened a small store in his parents' house, before emigrating to America where he found his talent to be of much use in the film industry. Becoming very popular among big screen celebrities, he realised the need to make shoes that are both comfortable and aesthetic. So he started studying anatomy and applying a bit of science to the creative process. This is how the wedge and cage heel were created. At his return to Italy, he established his workshop in Florence and continued to create footwear for the most powerful women in the world - from actresses to royalty - and experiment with various innovations.
