Maria 'Nina' Ricci founded her fashion house in 1932, together with her son. While Robert took control of the financial side and later the perfume business, his mother was the one responsible for the gorgeous whimsical creations that gave the fashion house its playful reputation. It is said that the designer worked directly on a mannequin, so she could see how the elaborate draping techniques would play out, while keeping a naturalness of design. The brand kept its feminine and romantic creative direction during the toughest of times, contributing to a wildly popular couture exhibition at the Louvre after the second world war was over. While the perfume range blossomed, the fashion house has seen several designer changes across the years, from Jules-Francois Crahay, Gerard Pipart, Natalie Gervais and James Aguiar to Lars Nilsson and Olivier Theyskens. Peter Copping is the most recent to have left the brand in 2014, after five years in charge of the womenswear collection, leaving Guillaume Henry as create director.
