We all know Tommy Hilfiger as the relaxed lifestyle brand that makes us feel like college students at any age, but the story of the brand is quite intriguing. Hilfiger started work in retail when he was 18 by buying jeans from New York City and selling a customised version in his hometown. His business proved reasonably successful for 7 years, when the opening of a shopping mall nearby caused him to go bankrupt. Still, he refused design assistant positions at Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis to launch his own label in 1985. His first menswear collection was a hit and in less than 20 years, the company had revenues over $1.8 billion. The brands was sold in 2006 but Tommy Hilfiger stayed as main designer, so the brand's success didn't stop there. Continuing its expansion around the world, the house delivered on its status as a premium American brand with a preppy style reflected in a multitude of ranges: denim, tailored, accessories, perfume, eyewear, footwear and home furnishings.
