Balenciaga is known as a French fashion house, thought it was first established in Spain by Cristóbal Balenciaga. However, the designer moved to Paris because of the Spanish Civil War. Cristóbal Balenciaga is renowned for creating a new silhouette for women. His originality is still very much acclaimed to this day. Christian Dior once described the designer as ‘the master of us all’, as his contribution to fashion is considered priceless. The Balenciaga Designer Profile is credited with having invented some iconic pieces like the chemise dress, the spherical balloon jacket, the cocoon coat, the high-waisted baby doll dress, the balloon skirt and the sack dress. The most prolific Balenciaga line was Empire, which included high-waisted dresses and kimono-like coats. Balenciaga was actually a self-taught designer and a rebel as he did not want to follow the established calendar for fashion shows in order to prevent the counterfeiting of his work. The fashion house was also never official part of the Chambre syndicale de la haute couture. According to the Balenciaga Designer Profile, the fashion house was closed in 1968, but re-opened in 1986, after it sounder died. Belanciaga regained its fame with the help of Nicolas Ghesquiere, another self-taught designer who reinterpreted the classic balenciaga pieces. Currently, Alexander Wang is creative director of the iconic label.
