Ann Demeulemeester is a Belgian designer, part of the Antwerp Six (a group of successful designers who graduated the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp). In 1982, a year after graduating, Ann Demeulemeester was named as the most promising designers. She presented her first collection in 1985 and started growing gradually, but steadily. The Ann Demeulemeester Designer Profile shows that the Belgian was inspired by Patti Smith’s style, Japanese culture and punk and this translated into a lot of black fabrics on the runway. To all these she added her own feelings in order to make clothes with a unique, but dark vibe. Ann Demeulemeester launched her menswear line in 1994. In November 2013, Ann Demeulemeester announced she was leaving her brand through a hand written letter. She was replaced by the young Sebastien Meunier. He is very keen on keeping the same style that made the brand successful, even if this brought him really hard reviews after hid debut at Paris Fashion Week. He was accused of having no vision and the apparel was described as an attempt to copy Ann Demeulemeester. However, Meunier was not afraid to admit that his influence in the brand is almost imperceptible, as he does not put his personality in his work. He states that it is important to acknowledge that he works for Ann Deemeulemeester and not for himself.
